Zagora is a town in the valley of the Draa River in a region called the Souss-Massa-Draâ in south-eastern Morocco. It is flanked by the Zagora Mountain, from which the town got its name. Originally it was called ‘Tazagourt’, Berber for ‘twinpeaks’, referring the form of the mountain. In old European maps Zagora Mountain is already indicated although the town itself was only built in the 20th century. On the top of the Zagora mountain the remains of an Almoravid fortress can still be seen, and there is an ongoing dispute as to the exact location of the former Almoravid mosque.
